NPT & NPSM Pipe Threads NPT (National Pipe Taper) threads are commonly used throughout industrial and agricultural applications across North America. The tapered threads create a seal through increasing thread interference as the fitting is tightened and the tapers engage. Pipe thread sealant is often used to help ensure a reliable seal along the thread crests while also reducing the risk of galling or binding. NPSM (National Pipe Straight Mechanical) threads have the same basic dimensions as NPTF threads but are not tapered. Instead, NPSM connections rely on a cone-shaped seat in the female fitting sealing against a chamfered surface on the male fitting. NPSM threads are commonly found on female swivel adapters and are especially prevalent in agricultural and farm equipment applications.
